St Nicholas Church, North Cotes

At the heart of North Cotes, St Nicholas Church is a historic and much-loved part of village life, bringing the community together for important celebrations and remembrance.

About the Church

St Nicholas Church is a Grade II listed Church of England building constructed from limestone, dating back to the 13th century. Much of what stands today was rebuilt in 1865 by architect James Fowler, while still retaining many original medieval features.

History & Features

  • 13th-century origins with Victorian restoration in 1865
  • Built from local limestone
  • Medieval stonework still visible throughout
  • Historic font combining 12th and 19th-century elements
  • Medieval cross in the churchyard

War Graves & Remembrance

The churchyard is home to a significant number of war graves, including servicemen from both World Wars and international forces. These graves reflect the village's strong historical ties to RAF North Cotes and are an important place of remembrance.

Each year, local schoolchildren honour those who lost their lives with a remembrance service, placing crosses, flags and poppies at the graves.

Services & Worship

Sadly, St Nicholas Church has now closed and regular services are no longer held here.

The churchyard remains a peaceful place of remembrance, and each November the children of North Cotes CE Primary School continue the village tradition of holding a remembrance service at the war graves — keeping the memory of those who served very much alive.
